Cosenza Vecchia
Documentary > 2001 > 26 mins > Digital Betacam
Searching for a relationship between his artwork and his family's political convictions, Australian theatre director David Pledger visits his mother's birthplace in Calabria, Italy.
David embarks on an expedition into the memory of his past and discovers his anti-fascist grandfather, Louis Stellato. Louis fled Italy in 1927, stowing away on a ship bound for Australia and leaving his parents, wife and two children. They were not reunited until 1931, in Melbourne.
The story shifts back-and-forth in time, from the night of Louis' escape from Italy, to a contemporary 'tour' of the city, to David's visit to Cosenza in 2000.
